Hardy filly Lady Colours raced into Magic Millions contention at the Gold Coast on Saturday but trainer Bruce Hill has declared her far from a certain starter in next week’s $2 million feature.
Having her first run in blinkers, Lady Colours exploded out of the barrier and led throughout to score a dominant 2-1/2-length win in the Magic Millions Tickets Online Now Handicap (900m).
Lady Colours was having her second run in the space of a week after she finished third at Rosehill and Hill said the Red Dazzler filly must pull up in top order for her to start in next week’s Magic Millions Classic.
“She won’t be going around for the sake of it, no way,” Hill said.
“She’s a very good filly and if she’s alright she’ll start next week, if she’s not she’ll go straight to the paddock.”
Confidently ridden by Paul Hammersley, Lady Colours firmed from $3.50 in to $2.60 favouritism and gave her supporters no reason for concern when she sprinted clear in the straight.
Adelaide colt Little Critter ($6.50) shared the early lead with Lady Colours and although he was outsprinted by the winner in the straight, he battled on bravely to hold down second.
Patinack Farm filly Headless ($12) ran on well when the race was all over to finish a half-length back third with her stablemate Aronson ($21) a close up fourth.
Little Critter’s trainer Tony McEvoy confirmed the Court Command colt a certain starter in the Magic Millions and said the horse would definitely improve with the run.
“His rider Dale Missen said he had to work too hard early to get over and he stayed on well in the straight,” McEvoy said.
“The race we set him for is next week and he will improve on that. Providing he pulls up in good order he’ll start for sure.”
